One arrangement publishes a single annual figure and cannot exceed the maximum in its own documents. The other quotes nothing, and how much you pay is settled by a stranger.
Only one of the two quotes a price
A managed fund tells you what it costs before you own any of it. The ongoing charges figure is one annual percentage covering the management fee and the running costs underneath it, worked to a defined rule, so it means the same thing on every factsheet. A copy relationship quotes nothing at all, and the platform advertising it as free is telling the truth.
They meter different things, which is why one can name a figure and the other cannot. A fund charges against what you hold, accrued daily, whether the manager deals ten times this month or not once. A copy relationship charges against what happens: a spread crossed as each position opens and closes, commission where the account carries one, financing for every night a copy survives.
Follow each line to the party that banks it. Inside a fund, the management portion goes to the firm running the portfolio, taken from the fund’s assets rather than invoiced to you, and the rest of the ongoing figure pays administration, the depositary, the auditor and the registrar, all named in the scheme documents. Your payee and your decision maker are the same firm.
In a copy relationship, none of what you pay reaches the person choosing the trades. Spread and financing go to the broker, which on a contract for difference also stands opposite the position you now hold. Where a lead trader is paid anything, the platform pays it, funded by volume your account helped produce. You hold an agreement with the venue and none with whoever generates the charges.

What leaves an account under each arrangement, who receives it, and the quantity the amount gets multiplied by. Fund charging as set out in the scheme documents and the cost disclosure rules; copy charging as it falls out of a broker’s own terms.
The published figure has a hole in the middle of it
The fund side should not be flattered here. Its headline number is comparable because it is defined, and the definition leaves something out. The ongoing charges figure covers running costs and excludes what the portfolio pays to deal: the spreads, commissions and taxes incurred whenever the manager buys or sells. Those come out of the return, and they follow activity you neither choose nor see coming.
Which is this article’s own objection to copy trading, in miniature. An activity charge, generated by another party’s decisions, sitting outside the number everybody quotes. The difference is that the fund’s version is a named category the disclosure rules require to be quantified and published, so anyone wanting the fuller total can add the two. Nothing requires that sum for a copy relationship, and no unit exists to put it in.
The meter starts on positions you were not present for
A copy relationship almost never begins on a clean sheet. The account you picked is already holding things when you arrive, and every platform has to decide what to do about them.
Some open the existing positions for you at this morning’s price, which puts you into a trade at a level its author never paid, a different distance from whatever they had in mind when they took it. Others start you at the next new position, so you follow a strategy from the middle while holding none of what it currently rests on.
Either choice generates charges before you have copied a single decision. Under the first, spreads get crossed on positions opened weeks ago and financing begins that night on exposure somebody else chose to run. Under the second, the open risk is invisible to you while the future trades are not, so you inherit the tempo without the book. Neither arrangement is concealed. It sits in a help article rather than in a charging schedule, and it settles your first month.
The part of the sum a funded account can supply
Every line above has a rate behind it, and rates of that kind exist only because somebody made a deposit and placed trades. A range lifted off a published schedule and multiplied by an unknown is not worth the arithmetic. The Investors Centre opens and funds live accounts with its own money to test UK trading platforms rather than compiling rankings from providers’ published fee schedules, and its comparison of copy trading platforms for UK traders reports what a copied trade cost on a statement rather than what a pricing page implies.
The reach of that is narrower than it looks. Funding an account settles what one copied round trip costs on that platform in that month, including components no schedule itemises. It settles nothing about how many round turns the followed account will produce by next April, that being a fact about a person rather than a property of a venue. The tested figure prices the unit and never the flow.
One of these prices has a ceiling written down
A fund’s charges live in a document drafted before you arrived. The scheme papers state the maximum management charge, the basis on which it is calculated and the procedure for changing it, and exceeding that maximum alters the scheme, carrying the notice the rules attach. The charge can rise. It cannot rise quietly.
A spread has no equivalent paper. It is set quote by quote and widens precisely when the market is moving, which is when copies are most likely firing into it. Financing is normally a benchmark plus the firm’s own addition, revisable under terms accepted at sign-up. None of it is improper. The ceiling is a firm’s discretion, not a published maximum, and a discretion is a poor thing to plan around.
Exits price the same way as everything above. Leaving a fund is one instruction covering the whole holding, dealt at a valuation point, and whatever it costs you is paid once. The meter stops when the deal settles, and stopping it was your decision alone.
Ending a copy relationship means dealing with whatever it holds when you stop, whether the platform closes those positions at once or hands them over for you to manage. Each still has to be closed, and closing crosses the same spread it crossed on the way in. Financing runs until the last one goes, and how many are open was settled by the account you followed.
The two figures that would price this in advance
Neither product is being told off for existing. The narrower question is whether a number can be attached before money moves. A fund answers with one figure and a definition of what it leaves out. A copy relationship could answer with two, neither exotic. How many round turns has the followed account produced per month, and how many nights has its average position stayed open?
Multiply the first by the round-trip cost on the account you would deal through, the second by nightly financing on the size you mean to run, and an annual figure appears that can sit beside a fund’s. Redo it a quarter later against your statement, since a change of tempo rewrites the sum without announcement.
Where a platform publishes those two figures the multiplication takes a minute, and where it publishes neither, the absence is the finding: a fund declining to quote an annual cost could not be sold to you at all.
